Full Monte No. 2

Ingredients
2oz Amaro Montenegro
1oz Rye (Willet 4 year straight rye)
1 dash Anogustura bitters

*orange peel

When I think of fall cocktail ingredients, the first ingredient that comes to mind is Amaro Montenegro. This amaro is made of 40 spices including those with notes of cloves, nutmeg, dried oranges, coriander, and more. These flavors are a perfect pairing with a high proof rye to match with any fall or winter occasion.

To me, this drink feels like a reverse Manhattan. Where the 2:1 ratio ratios of the rye and amaro are switched, with the Amaro Montenegro now being 2 ounces and the rye being 1 ounce.

Although it is not pictured, the orange peel expressed over the top is very important. Make sure you have a fresh orange on hand when mixing this drink.

Recipe
1. Add the Montenegro, rye, and bitters to a mixing glass.
2. Add two large cubes and mix till cold.
3. Pour over large cube in a double rocks glass.
4. Express orange peel over drink, wipe the rim, discard orange peel and serve.

Notes:
Like any amaro forward drink, dilution is very important or the drink may have a mouthfeel that is too silky. If you pour your drink and notice silky waves from the amaro in your glass, your drink is probably under diluted. This will produce a less flavorful aroma and a “stronger,” less balanced cocktail.

Some garnish a Full Monte No. 2 with a brandied cherry, like a Manhattan… do as you please!
